DIY 102: CONVERTING JEANS PANTS TO BACKPACK

So in our Beginner’s online training class this week,  we did not only look at the basics of sewing,  i.e the difference between tailoring and fashion designing,  we also looked at all the basic sewing tools and their uses.  Then we looked at the first project in our DIY course: converting jeans pants to back pack.

WHAT IS D.I.Y?

Before I dived right into giving the materials,  tools and procedures of this how to make  Backpack(or as it is popularly known in Nigeria,  Schoolboy), from a jean pants during the class,  I gave a quick explanation of what DIY means and its relevance in the fashion world.
D-I-Y is an acronym for “Do-It-Yourself”, which literally means “Make everything yourself”. Make that dress yourself, make that shoe yourself and so on and to forth. It also entails cloth recycling. That is, rather than get rid of that skirt that no-longer fits, you could recycle it into something that you need or something that could be beneficial to you. Like what I did.

WHY I CONVERTED MY JEANS.

So I had this jean pants that had given up the ghost, like literally. It had waned so thin that there was this big hole at the butt area. So it was clear that there was no saving it. No patching will resuscitate it. None whatsoever. So I decided to do something about it. I had always wanted a backpack because I move around with my laptop a lot. Considering that at the time, I had to travel, I decided to make one and forfeit the cost of buying one. Heard these bags cost N8,000- N10,000 even as fairly used.Anyway, here are the tools and materials I used to make mine.

Materials Needed:

1. Jean pants ( x1)
2. Zips(x 2) i.e 24″ jean zipper and 8-14 inches regular zipper
3. Floral fabric
4. Lining fabric(preferably jacket lining
5.Pads

Tools Needed:

1. Sewing machine
2. Overlock machine/serger( optional)
3. Scissors
4. Pressing iron.

So your jeans pant should be cut into the following pieces and sizes:

Jeans Pieces

  • Back piece x 1 [13″ x 15″, rounded top]
  • Front piece x 1[13″ x 11″, rounded top)
  • Front contrast x 1 [ 13.5″ x 3.5″]
  • Base [Leather] x 1 [ 13.5″ x 3.5″]
  • Top x 1 [ 21″ x 3.5″]
  • Handle x 1 [ 9″ x 2″]
  • Straps x 2 [26″ x 3.5′]
  • Side x 6 [3.5″ x 3.5″]

Lining pieces

  • Front x 1 [ 13.5″ x 15″, rounded top]
  • Back x 1 [13.5″ x 15″, rounded top]
  • Side x 1 [ 10″ x 3.5″]
  • Base x 1 [13.5″ x 3.5″]
  • Top x 1 [ 21″ x 3.5″]

Pocket pieces
